Dowels can be tight, if the heads are not beat up to bad I always remove them first. Coarse thread 5/8 nut screws on them. Will force them out or they start spinning. If dowel starts spinning they can usualy be pulled or pried out by vice grips on the nut or pry bars behind nut. Also use long bolts or studs in two frame rail holes to keep things in line until clutch plate clears trans drive shaft. No mounting bolt behind starter.
