IH 504 Dies after releasing starting switch

I hope someone can help. I am trying to fix my dad's old IH 504 gas-powered tractor. After engaging the starter switch, the tractor fires and begins to run. When I release the switch, it dies. I'm new to working on this tractor so any information will help. I do know that the starting system has a ballast resistor although I don't know much about its function. Help this rookie if you can. Thanks in advance.
