Thermostat Question - 300 IH UTILITY

I own a 300 Utility and decided to replace the thermostat and found it did not have one in it. So I went and purchased one, and when I placed it into the housing, the motor began to overheat. The way the thermostat is designed, it would fit only one way...I think. Can anybody give me some clues as to what is wrong with this situation. Thanks alot.
