We rebuild generators and alternators. I must say that generators don't say 6/12 volt on the tag. Yes some starters I rebuild the armature is listed as 6/12 volt but the field coils make the difference. There have been lots of people over the years that do things like this but I don't recommend it to my customers. If you switch to an alternator. I only recommend the one wire style for applications that have only a starter and no accessories, that is what they were designed for. Most people think a one wire looks cleaner but there are reasons for the other style. Hot rod guys come to me with different problems that are caused by running a one wire style alternator. Do it right the first time and save yourself problems later.
