Alternators are more reliable than generators with mechanical regulators; however, a generator with a solid-state regulator is a significant improvement. The electrical loads on a tractor are light compared to automotive loads, which reduces brush ware. The generators brushes, bushing and bearing are easier to replace compared to an alternator repair, which is some models, requires soldering and a press to replace bearings. Also consider the availability of the alternator parts; generator rebuild kits are retelly available at only $10. Of course, you can replace the alternator at higher cost. I found a Hitachi 14231 for about $85; the mounting kit is about $35, for a total of $120.
I had three Delco alternator failures on my other Farmall H in the last 20 years. With only a few hours run of time per year; the failures were most likely due to weather exposure.
