Should be 12 volts positive ground. I think the oval Delco-Remy tag on the generator will indicate what you have provided it isn't covered with multi layers of red paint.
A chain or strap wrench might work for the pin spanner. Snap-on or Craftsman catalog will probably have what you need. I think if you spent 1/2 hour on the Web, you would find a spanner.
