I had the same problem with my 400. I pulled the cover above the TA clutch to satisfy my curiosity. I had adjusted the clutch linkage numerous times with no sucess. When I pulled the cover I see the pressure plate was dragging just a little bit on one side. In my case one of the pivot pins on the clutch fingers fell out. Once replaced the TA functioned perfectly. After a period of time externally adjusting the TA will no longer work because of clutch wear. You have to pull the cover like I did and adjust the clutch fingers. This is accomplished by ajusting the pivot bolts evenly. Pull the cover and make sure when you move the TA lever that the presure plate moves back about. 040" off the clutch. Just a little drag will lock the trans like you described. I know your frustration, nothing worse than finishing a pull and not being able to back up or get the old girl out of gear!
