Coil or mag? If it is a coil, I'd put my money on the battery/charging system. As previously said , if battery is over 5 buy a new one. If the battery is fairly new try cleaning the terminals and charge the battery and see if it works. From what you describe I would doubt that it is the starter, as you had a problem while it was running. Remember hammers have a very important place when working on old equiptment, but the electrical system isn't one of them.
