dead starter?

Today I went to do some work with my super AV.I started it and noticed it acted like a dieing battery.I did the work and turned it off.I went to put it away and it would not start i charged it for about 2 hours then tried it, nothing.When you beat on the starter it turns over but will not fire.Is there a simple reason and fix or do I need a new starter?
