Quite some time ago, I purchased the new type of starter Gear for a Super C. It seems I have lost the instructions as I just have the new part in the box. I took the old starter out today and removed the old style Bendix. The new Bendix part, which is all one piece, does not want to slide on to the shaft because there is a set screw that does not retract. The starter shaft is completely round and the set screw cannot be retracted because it doe not clear an outer sleeve on the starter. It covers about 1/2 of the screw. It doesn not appear that the sleeve is removable. There is probably an obvious way to do this, but I am not seeing it. I don"t want to damage anything. How do I get the new gear to slide on? Is the set screw supposed to align with where the old Bendix threads into the shaft? Any help is appreciated. I hope I don"t have the wrong part.
