Black smoke out of Super C

My Super C has been runnin fine, until last monday when i tried to start it, and it cranked, made a loud pop and died, i had a short in the ignition, so i hot wired my tractor... then as i tried to start my tractor all i got was deep black puffs of smoke, no real running, just puffs of smoke while the engine slowly turned over... so i am wonderin why my tractor has started doin this, i checked for water, and oil and can find neither... and as high of grade of gas i am runnin through the engine it better run pretty good, any info will be appreciated.
