I got forced onto this new project! I have a gut feeling what most will say but here it goes. Have a 560 diesel with 1400 original hours and an after market loader. Got the tractor with the purchase of a new farm a year ago. I have been using it for snow/cutting wood and ect. When she starts up it sounds like I have a valve sticking or injector problem because it takes a while for either the valve to free up or the cylinder to come to life. I always observe a puff of smoke, " i think raw fuel" each time it mis-fires on which ever cylinder has the issue. Then while warming up it will ocassionaly hit on that cylinder until she warms up enough and hits all the time. The smoke (I think raw fuel)then goes away and she runs like she should. Couple weeks ago it was cold and I had her plugged in for about 3 hours before I fired it up. She ran like always and idled for about 10 min before I got on it. Before I touched a control I heard a large pop/breaking metal sound and she stumbled, spit out some dark smoke but still ran. Seconds after the pop it started a noticable knock. Of course I shut it down. I checked days later but no water in the oil. Today I had no other way to move it to the shop so i fired it up. She still starts (harder)and still has the knock and more inital smoke but still cleaned up during the time I moved it into the shop. What do you all think is the culprit?
Since this is my first diesel where should a guy start looking? Drop the pan? pull head? what? Or should I just plan on a rebuild and start taking it apart as such?
