Walt, The '84 series tractors are very good. You should carefully check the tractor's physical condition and ask to see rougly how many hours have been put on since the hour meter broke. The price doesn't sound too bad. Try to find out what the tractor was used for, how long and how often it was used. Carefully check things like how fresh the oil is, Hy-Tran, the three-point hitch, the PTO, check the steering, inquire about the torque amplifier, the brakes, and the clutch. If the tractor looks good physically, runs well, and seems sturdy, the price is right. Be sure to get the hour meter fixed, as it's going to be helpful when it comes to routine maintenance. The 584 is a great little tractor and capable of a lot of things. The price sounds good if it's in good shape. I hope this has been somewhat of a help. If you do decide to buy, good luck and enjoy your IH product. If I can be of any further help, let me know. ;-) Regards, John D. Lewis jdlewis@electrosity.com

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
