been fooling with a buddies 254 ih diesel for a while with an overheat problem. he said when worked hard the tractor overheats unless the hood is left open. he had a guy work on it a couple years ago, said he machined the head and new head gasket. worked for a while but then problem returned. battery and air cleaner were mounted directly in front of radiator, he thought that may be the problem. fooled with it for a while, then finally pulled the head. it was warped .005, and apparently the other guy didnt machine the head, just gooped it up with some kind of sealer. head is back from machine shop, waiting for parts from cih. 100 dollars for a head gasket!!! 3 cyl mitsubishi diesel.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
