distributor play

My "new" super "C" "woofs" and dies under load, so I've gone through compression checks, air cleaner cleaning, carb rebuilding, and am now on the ignition. On initial inspection of the distributor I found what I thought might be excessive play in two ways. I don't have a micrometer here, but I would guess I have a total of 0.025 in. of horizontal play on the shaft that holds the rotor. I know this would be a lot for a 1969 Camaro ( from a past life, before I repented and went red ), but the tractor runs great without a load. In case it helps, inspection of the distributor cap inside shows normal wear on three of the aluminum contact spots, and minimal wear on the fourth. I've changed the plugs, put in D18Y, pulled out some D15Y plugs ( OK? )and I'll check wire resistance in the morning. What else I thought was odd was the free play rotating the rotor by hand. There seems to be a few degrees of "slop" before I feel the resistance of of what I figure is the advance weight springs. I would have thought the spring resistance should have been felt during any hand rotation of the rotor, not after play. Is this normal? Do the advance weights take care of this play when the rotor starts spinning. If not, what does a guy do about it, or is it nothing to worry about. I really appreciate all the help and experience shared, I know it can with a cost. Thanks!!! I'll keep you posted on my success / failure.

I've already drilled the center of the bolt out with about 7/64" drill bit the entire length of the bolt. Only one end of the bolt is visible. I tried to use an easy out but it wasn't budging and I didn't want t
