Don't know if you saw my post a while back. Well, I'm about to embark on fixing my Cub again. I have had problems with the tranny, and I am at a loss. It made noise like it was coming apart...has ben since I bought it. I took it apart and found some rust pocks on the gears, but saw that the rear input shaft bearing was gone. I hear that this is a common problem. The rest seemed OK, but I replaced seals and differential carrier bearings. So I sewed it up. Same noise accousted my ears. So I took it apart again, and replaced the two outputshaft bearings. Same noise. It does not stop when you brake one wheel and spin, so I assume it is not the reduction stuff. Besides, you can hear that it is coming from the left side. Now, I have the parts manual, and I see that I have all of the parts there, but this is what bothers me. The output shaft has a two part bearing at the rear, I guess to allow for slight movement. then it has spacers and gears, then, as it goes through the case in front, it has a bearing holder and the bearing. There is nothing on the holder to keep the bearing in place, but the bearing has a groove, and a retainer ring. then a nut and cotterpin, and a cap. The thing is, I can pull on the front of the shaft, and move it 3/8 to 1/2 inch forward. That mean that the rear bearing inner ring does not stay lined up with the outer bearing. If fact, when I pull it out forward, that's when it lines up, but now it is too long for the cap! Do I have the right shaft in there? No idea. If anyone has one out they could measure, it may help. Do I have the front bearing on right? I have the retainer toward the front. That is the way it came off, but who is to say what the guy before did? I even tried overfilling it to completely submerge the gears to see if it would be muffled...but it sounds the same. Please, any ideas???
