Scott; From what i can remember of the Cub transmission, the shaft should not move.When you say you can move the shaft ahead, is that when the cap is on the front with all the bolts tight? The shaft should be held in place by the front cover holding the bearing snap ring against the bearing retainer.There are steel shims between the brg.retainer and the housing.By adding or removing shims,you move the pinion gear into or away from the differential ring gear.(The 2 pc. bearing at the back lets the shaft move to where it needs to be.)The gear fit up is very important and if it is wrong,that could be why you have so much noise.I have the feeling that there is something out of place with the front brg.setup causing your problem.If all that checks out okay, then the other possible culprit is the reverse idler.Did you have it out? Is the shaft rough? It runs as long as the tractor is moving in either direction and can create some pretty strange noises. Let us know what you find.
