Model M battery question

A friend of mine bought a gas M. It had a 12 volt battery in it. I don't think the entire system was converted to 12 volt. I suspect someone just slipped a in a 12 volt battery. I do know that a regular gas M with a 6 volt battery should have positive ground. 1st:In a 12 volt "conversion" do you keep the 12 volt at positive ground also? 2nd: Since we know nothing of the true history of this tracotor, how do we identify a "genuine 12 volt conversion"?
