Big Don, p! Tranny update!

I drained my Cub's tranny and opened up the back plate (there is no PTO, so everything is very visible), and took off the shifter plate. Then I blocked it, jacked it up, and started turning wheels. Now, as information, I have replaced both of the differentail carrier bearings and seals, and I put the shims back as I found them. I also replaced both bearings and seals on the input and output shafts. I think I isolated the noise, but I'm still confused. I even started her up and run it slow in 1st. You can easily stop the running wheel and make the other one turn. Well, I'll just throw out my findings. Contrary to what I was thinking, there is no play in the output shaft. It looks great. There is no noise coming from the differential at all. The input shaft is quiet as well. The noise is coming from the output shaft and the reverse idler. My apologies to Big Don, I had discounted his comment that the reverse idler always turns. I thought it just turning when you were in reverse, hense the name. Fact is (steak dinner for Big Don if we ever meet), it turned all of the time. There is no wobble in the gear, nor the one that turns it on the output shaft. There is a little play so that the reverse idler moves slightly back and forth along the shaft. Some .005 or so. The gears are kind of worn pointy, so that if you turn the wheel back and forth while in gear, you can hear them slap together. The only thing I could guess is happening, is that the gears are slapping when they mesh, or that the reverse idler is slapping against the case when it moves that .005. So, the next thing was to can the 80/90 lube, and try some 80/145. I put a gallon in. Well over the full mark, and low and behold, I could still hear the noise. Just as loud. So, for experiments sake, I filled the entire tranny with 80/145, completely submerging the whole mess. Same noise! Could it be sending the noise through the metal, and out through the case? Before you ask, I'm quite sure that the noise is coming from the tranny, and not the reduction gears or bearing in the wheels. It goes on which ever wheel is turning, and is in the tranny. What to do next? Should I replace the reverse idler? Put a spring washer to stop play along the shaft? Should I replace the gear on the output shaft? What do you think? As always, I'm grateful for any comments!
