Sorry Scott I had no time to open the tranny on the Cub, I also am at a loss as to what is the source of the noise. I wish I had more to offer to you but I guess I would remove the reverse gear(if possible, and still let it run) and see if that eliminates the noise. The unfortunate thing is that this transmissions have straight cut gears and sometimes that allone gives a whining noise. It does not sound like yours is a whine, in fact you described it as a grind, so I don't know what else to think of. LEt us know what you find. Sorry I could not be of better use.
