CUB 8 VOLT WITH NEGATIVE GROUND

I recently bought a Cub LoBoy and when battery went bad, I discovered it was an 8V battery connected with negative ground. Is there any problem with using an 8V battery and can I connect it with positive ground to match the manual? I am considering polarizing the generator. The lights don't work and I haven't had a chance to check that out but wondered if 8V battery or negative ground could be part of the problem with no lights? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
