The D-361 engine has several cooling nozzles in the cyl head and they require pressure buildup in the crankcase and head to circulate the coolant the way it was intended. Taking the thermostat out does not cause the coolant to go through radiator so fast it can't cool, it upsets the pressure balance all through the engine disrupting the flow in critical places that then therefore become over heated. All engines are designed that way but I think that D-361 is more critical in my opinion. With a thermosyphon system the holes are very large through out the whole engine, including head gaskets, that is why you need to change head gaskets if adding a water pump to engines that did not have one. Also, if you notice on the 400 series engine how little room between the outside of that cyl liner to the block for coolant. It is all balanced out with the proper sized holes in block to send a controlled supply of coolant through that critical area for rapid heat dispersal and or retention for even operating temp through out the block.
