Here is my theory, the battery cable shorted out, when this happenes the cable gets so hot the rest of the insulation burns off. Not a good thing with a tractor that has its fuel tank near the battery!!
This happened to dad while driving a JD 2840 and the only way to stop it was to take off the battery cables.
Soooo check those cables and replace if cracking, much cheaper than a rebuild.
