Strange behavior in a 1945 M

I posted this question the other day and I cannot find it in the groups so I am reposting.
Yesterday I shutdown my M and as it was stopping, it chugged once like it was going to restart and then began to run backwards, blowing smoke out of the air intake. It restarted fine. Anyone have any idea what happened? I make sure to let it idle a bit before shutting it down.
