For whatever reason, the fuel mixture in one of the cylinders ignited just before the piston got to the top of the compression stroke. This probably occurred at the instant the engine stopped. The combustion sent the piston back the way it came from with enough force to spin the engine one or two revolutions, pushing hot gasses (and whatever un-burned fuel mixture that was in the intake manifold) back through the air intake.

This is most likely to occur with an engine that is either a little too warm, has hot carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, or a spark plug that was too hot. Unless it makes a habit of doing this, I wouldn't worry about it.

If the engine shows signs of doing this on a regular basis, or if it continues to try to run in the correct direction when you shut it off, then you need to track down the conditions that are causing the problem. (Usually some combination of the above and a throttle plate that does not close completely.)

It can be a little un-nerving. The first time it happened to me, I was about 10 years old, and was certain I'd ruined our trusty Farmall H forever!
