Putting clear over a single stage paint some times works, sometimes you get a mess.
The single stage and clear coat dry at different rates. The clear will actually dry sooner and that is what causes wrinkles. The clear needs to be applied shortly after the paint, to early and the clear "wrinkles", to late and the clear coat doesn't chemically bond and is washed away within a year of two of painting under normal use.
I painted my 350 11 years ago with Rustoleum IH red. Still looks pretty good but then it spends most of its life under a shed roof saving it from sun fade.
