I used to have a 560 gas and the tach didn't work on it when I bought it. The fix for it was simply to unscrew it from where it screws in the distributor and put a couple of small washers inside the cable end. This prevented the cable end from going in too far. The cable has a square end on the last inch or so of the cable which must engage the small square hole on the distributor in order to turn the cable. If it goes in to far it the square hole will turn, but will not engage the cable. As far as set screws, there is none that I know of. If yours won't pull out, I suspect something may be busted inside.
