gas and motor oil in base

Hello:

On a recently purchased 1958 IH 130 Farmall, I have gas in the motor oil that can be smelled on the dipstick. What is the cause of that happening, or what are the consequences if I don't get it fixed, for that matter. I do not plan to go back to the guy who sold it to me. I just want to fix it, and some tips on what to look for would be welcomed. Thanks in advance.
