if you have a check light or voltmeter, turn on the ignition switch; you should have 6 or 12 volts (whichever system you have) at the coil. if not you have a bad connection, switch etc.
if you have voltage at the coil, you could need a set of points, or ignition coil.
to test the coil remove the short wire going to the distributor, from the distributor. remove the lead wire going from coil to the distributor, replace it with a spark plug wire and insert spark plug and ground the spark plug. then be sure that switch is on and drag the short distributor wire across ground. if coil is good, you should get a spark across spark plug.
