Jim - Your H engine will safely support itself with both side rails removed. (Keep in mind the engine block - not the side rails - is the actual load-bearing frame member)
When I removed the bolster from my SH I unscrewed the rear frame rail mounting bolts a few turns each and removed the two engine block bolts. But left both rails in place. The rails can be spread a bit the bolster will slide easily forward and away from the tractor.
However there's no harm in removing one frame rail if you prefer. Nor does it matter which side you remove - pick the one that gives you the most space to work.
