Got off work early today, was slow and internet went out.. couldn't get much email reading done.. er.. work.. .. anyway.
got home.. got the dirty clothes on.. put on my face shield, put a new cut off blade in the die grinder, and set my chissled out, hi-brite led flashlight, and can of penetrant.
located keyway, cut so that the blade passed NEXT to the key.. mad thecut on both side. during the cut the blade wore down a bit, which was good.. it let me cut all the way to the edge of the large diameter and stay out of the timin cover.
actually I did nick the paint off the cover in 2 spots while trying to position the blade.. nuttin the full paint job won't fix :)
took my time cutting, stopping alot to inspect with lamp.
cutting was making the hub darned hot and was boiling the grease and oil off it, so I would dowse it liberally with pb blaster penetrant every time I stopped.
finally got the cut 99% thru on the keyway side as far as i could get back, and 95% thru on the other side.
got the air chissle ready if needed.. figured I would get one hand chissle started then use the air chissle
tried a couple different hand chisles for fit.. first one toobig.. 2nd one looked good.. set it in the crack with the keyway use my 3lb drilling hammer, gave it a tap just to set ip, then another lil tap to set it better before I gave it a better whack.. but had to stop.. that 2nd LITTLE tap split it.. another lil tap and the crack ran all the way to the back on both sides... she was still too snug ( and hot ) to remove by hand so I set a small 2 bar puller on her, and under very light hand pressure on a wrench ont he end of the threaded bar just spun her right off like she should have been.
took her to the bench for close inspection.
here is what I found.
more globbed stuff up front of the ratchet hole, and I can see where it extruded from under the edge of the crank snout. stuff inside and protected from the environment is decidedly greay, and 99.999% unmistakeable for JB WELD. the inside bore of the pulley has striations where it looks like it had a heavy wire ball run thru the center.. or a sanding stone.
also deteced lil shreds and a thin 'red' film that came off like superglue pieces with a razor blade... red loctite maybee ?
inspection of the crank.. it looks great no marks, the keyway isn't buggered, no scratches and no cuts, it's still nice and square.. i think the prev owner had a problem with the pulley itself and buggered it up.. crank snout looks great.
seal surface was not the smootheset.. had that 'cast' feel to it.. but i've seen worse.
seal was hogged out and wore down to a nub of the lip. no wonder it poured oil...
i'm feeling a tad better.
might treat myself to a lean steak tonight and some vegitables and a salad.
thanks for all the help, and keep it in reserve. i'm SURE i will have more questions as I go.
got my manuals today, also called a guy and ordered a pulley...
