Apparently there were no plugs on either side of the raised housing, so the pin must be rusted in there.
He just needs to beat on it (the pin) more I guess... --------------------- Ok, I went out with a flashlight to get a good look, and it just looks like the end of a steel pin recessed into the hole. Scratched but not dented from beating on it. Looking down the top of the shifter, the (same pin) INSIDE looks smaller in diameter than what looks like the pin on the outside. ???

now my husband says the other side of the pin looks dented like it may be a plug. Maybe this pin is more like a round-headed bolt and will only come out in one direction. He's going to drill into the other side to try pulling out the plug if one is there.
