I would never do it without removing the pan. That is ridiculous. It is WAY too easy to take those bolts out to prevent the future headache. The greased bit theory has been disproved because the grease plugs up the flighting of the drill bit causing it to not clear the chips. This could send as much or more stuff down into your hole.
The power unit engines did have a dipstick in that location.
