On the starter solenoid there should be a large wire from battery, a small wire from key(switch) to energize the solenoid(starter) and a small wire to power side of the coil.This small wire should supply 12 volts to coil for starting when solenoid is engaged. The coil voltage when running should be supplied thru a resistance (wire or resistor) from the ignition switch. Might be worth investing in a new solenoid as the internal connections some times corrode.
