There are three positions for the lever/rod. In the middle position the rod is pulled out and a small tab on the underside of the rod is hooked on the support. This is "hold" position. Hydraulic fluid is held in the cylinder/s and loads are prevented from lowering. In the pulled all the way back toward the operator, the system is in "lift" position, Fluid is pumped into the cylinder/s while held back. :lifting the rod against a spring toward the light bar, and pushing it forward is lower position, letting the cylinder go down. With only that one valve, it is an open center one way hydraulic using only one hose to lift and lower. Sometimes the little flat spring is broken and it can be replaced easily. Jim
