My uncle had the same idea and bought a 110v stick and a wirefeed for the farm about 15 years ago, to learn on his own, but they blew every breaker.
when I have the opportunity for my own place, a workspace for me with proper wiring will be part of the plan. Right now my budget dictates I rent an apartment in town and visit the farm a few times a week. I'm lucky my wife understands and lets me get out there to get fresh air and not feel trapped by the small space.
