The belt adjusting bolt and nut: This nut is supposed to be kept from turning by the sides of the back of the casting it is in. Your nut may be worn/corroded or the wrong nut. It is a one-wrench job if the nut is the right size to ride between the flanges on each side of it. I pry the assembly up pushing on a socket on the bolt head, with the bolt almost tight. Loose enough to move. Then I tighten it with the socket. It was hard to learn, but now I don't dread adjusting the belt on a C. You can get it too tight with a pry bar, too. Make sure everything is clean so it will slide, and you aren't trying to pinch dry grease to hold the assembly.
