The manual says .020 for points with distributor and .013 with magneto. I just took my distributor apart and found the mecanical advance parts were so worn that the weights were rubbing the inside of the distributor. If your's is worn as bad, it could explain the erratic behavior at higher speeds. To set the timing, align the timing mark located on the flywheel with the mark on the housing so that #1 is at TDC. The timing mark is a line with "D-C" & "1-4" on either side. Its is very faint and may be hard to find if you flywheel is dirty. The indicator on the housing is at the very bottom. You can see all this through the hole on the bottom of the clutch housing. Once this is done, make sure the distributor's rotor is pointing toward #1 plug wire, retard the timing by rotating the distributor in the same direction that the cam rotates so that the points are closed, and with the hot wire of the coil near ground, advance the timing by rotating the distributor the other way slowly until the points open and a spark occurs. Lock the distributor down there. This is the correct setting for your engine and the rest of the timing advance occurs in the distributor with the mechanical advance.
