When I was a motor pool specialist and medic in VietNam (1968-69), we had a scary incident re: wheel split rings. One of our troop drivers was working on a flat tire across the motor pool from our office tent. We heard a god-awful sproing sound, and ran out and across the yard. Just as we got there, the split ring came back to earth. That man was one of the luckiest men alive-- at the moment it let loose, he was leaning away and it missed decapitating him. Lesson: 1. Have experienced help. 2. Have a cage to work within. 3. If no cage, do this ONLY with a very experienced and skilled person: several steel bars pushed in the holes and braced under the tire. Let me tell you-- that"s scary stuff! Work safely and live longer!
