You cannot put the diode in the one wire of the one wire alternator and get the excitation voltage fed back to the alternator. The diode would prevent feedback and the alternator would not charge. An alternator needs voltage delivered to it inorder to function. It is this feedback voltage that is discharging the battery causing the problem on the tractor in question. The diode could carry the alternator output.
