You are going in the right direction. You can totally gut the transmission w/o splitting.
Already good advice here. Now it is *possible* to remove the input assembly without taking the clutch loose but you will never get it back in!
As others have said get the four special bolts from the coupler and the coupler itself out. Next, out goes the clutch fork and the throwout bearing holder. Next, take the pressure plate loose.
Now you can tilt the whole pressure plate/clutch disc/clutch shaft assemblage enough to slide the clutch shaft out. Before you do that however, evolve a third arm and hand so you can keep the shaft from falling out and landing on your neck! The clutch disk and pressure plate just sit loose inside the torque tube. You can remove the clutch disk on a SM but the pressure plate will not come out unless you split.
Now you have enough room to remove and install the input shaft assembly into the trans. It will be helpful to first break loose the bolt that holds the trans yoke. Put trans in two gears since you already have the top off and that will hold it while you wrench.
