It could be that the splines are worn that engage for 5th gear or it could be that the detent ball is missing or the spring is broken, which would be much cheaper fixes. You may want to start by dropping the belly pump and removing the input shaft, U joint and upper constant mesh gear assembly. This would give you a chance to look at the gears that make 5th and see what kind of shape they are in. The top cover is not too bad of a job, just remove the belt pulley drive if so equipped, the gas tank, the seat, unbolt the steering column from the top cover and hoist the whole thing up a bit in the air if you don't want to have to disconnect everything. The top cover is not that heavy, maybe 100 pounds at a guess. If it sticks try tapping in hardwood wedges in the crack between the rear casting and the cover, try not to whack the "ears" of the top cover too much with a hammer as they will break off pretty easily.
