Motor oil is a mineral oil while hydraulic oil and transmission fluid is not. They used to be referred to as vegetable oils. I'm not really sure of the source, but motor oil will damage most hydraulic oil seals. The old trick of putting motor oil in a badly leaking automatic transmission just to get home stops the leaks by swelling the seals, for a while. My dad told me not to put motor oil in the Lift-All when I bought my first Farmall. He bought an M in 52 and had no hydraulic oil. He and his brother argued over using motor oil, and his older brother won out. They topped it off with a couple of quarts of motor oil and lost all the seals in short order. The multiple use hydraulic oils on the market for transmission use as well are automatic transmission type oils.
