A 300 does not have enough hydraulic reservoir to run a log splitter on its own. It only holds a couple gallons of fluid.
The typical 4x24 hydraulic cylinder on a 3pt log splitter will suck the reservoir dry long before it's fully extended. That's what happened here.
It requires 301 cubic inches, or about 1.5 gallons, of oil to extend a 4x24 cylinder. Plus whatever it takes to fill the hydraulic hoses. If your reservoir was down a little, most are, you sucked it dry.
Plus, with the constant cycling back and forth, and the force needed to split the wood, the oil will get hot quickly.
You need 5-10 gallons of extra fluid capacity. It needs an external tank that is connected to the fill pipe on the hydraulic reservoir.
