Fuel problem on IH 300

I've got an IH 300. It's been running pretty well all summer, but had it out this weekend. It was very cold for this time of year, upper 30's. It started up OK and after a few minutes was able to decrease the choke setting to open. It ran this way for 10-15 minutes and then acted as tho it wanted to stall. I pulled the choke out and it ran smoothly again. To get back to my house I had to leave the choke shut. As soon as I tried to open it, the tractor would start to stall. I had enough fuel in the tank. Does temperature affect too lean a mixture?? Any suggestions out there??
