A Hi-Lift Jack is a brand name. It is a mechanical jack that is made of a long steel I-beam with holes all along the web of the beam. They are made 36", 42", 48", and 60" I think. I think they are about like pipe wrenches: $1.00/inch.

They have a nice cast iron foot at the bottom to rest on the ground.

When you operate the jack, two pins are used alternately to slide into the holes in the beam instead of a pawl in notches like in an old car jack.
