Belt Pulley on a M

The outer oil seal on the pulley shaft of my belt pulley started to leak. There have been threads about changing gear oil and The Red always said to loosen the four bolts on the outer cage and tap out the shaft a little to drain that oil.
There are two bearings on that shaft. Can I continue to pull out the shaft with two pry bars on the outer cage?.
Do I need to take off the entire housing to disconnect the retaining nut and cotter pin?
