I rebuilded a 400 about 7 years ago and when I did I put in 4 1/8 high dome pistons and had the head rebuilded. I too have the dieseling trouble and have talked a few old HI hands who said that would happen. They knew of no cure. They did say to let it cool down before shutting it off would help. As far as the timing, set it TDC center with the engine off, then see if its 25 deg when running a high idle. If its not, then you may want to rebuild your distributor. Also pull the TA back when shutting it off. With it foreward you can damage the overiding cluth in it. By the way my 400 has a very big attitude. It pulls a 13' disk with no trouble and I have 15.5 tires on the rear.
