Timing question on H

I have just painted one of my tractors. I removed the distributor cap and wires to keep from getting paint on them. I put the tractor back together a night or so ago and I am having trouble getting it to run right. I lined up the spark plug wires firing order 1 3 4 2 but it will not run. I did get it to run by plugging #1 from the distributor cap to the #4 plug, but not too well. What do you think is going on here? I have had this tractor for about a year and a half and I have never thought it run exactly right. Could this engine be timed to the #4 cylinder instead of #1? It is confusing to say the least. Any help would be appreciated. Ed
