yep, sounds like one or more of your gears are worn. have you checked for any broken teeth on them? someone may have the specs on the wear for the gears, but if it wasn't to costly i would look at replacing first and second gear sets since they are used more. the others may be fine. and that was a good ideal on the other response about having the manifold trued. you can also take a straight edge and a feeler gauge and see how far out it is. push comes to shove you can true it up with a file. this takes alot of time and you have to keep checking after every couple of strokes.
